shelter from
the storm

Shelter from the storm is the introductory period of a resident’s stay in our program. It lasts anywhere from two to four weeks and is decided on an individual basis. This program provides a safe place for our new residents to get acclimated to their new living environment. It consists of reading specific books, listening to speaker tapes, watching inspirational movies, and discussing the content with the house manager daily. The residents in the shelter from the storm are encouraged to focus on this new life, without drugs or alcohol, and gain a foundation for lifelong recovery. Shelter from the storm provides residents with the ability to attend twelve-step meetings, update their resumes, search for jobs, apply for resources in the community, and set goals for themselves.

house of freedom and miracles

We reach out to women in the community, treatment centers, and homeless shelters and offer our services. We provide independent living quarters in a shared housing environment. We share networking relationships with AVOC, SUMA, and Women Helping Women along with various housing agencies to meet each woman’s immediate needs as well as follow-up services. We assist women in finding and integrating into needed support groups including 12-Step Fellowships. We direct and assist women with continued education and employment opportunities. We engage and assist women in re-uniting with their families.

serenity house

The men who come to serenity house have lost almost everything but their lives. Many addictive men no longer have any family support, no driver’s license, no high school diploma or GED, no home, no job, no money, and no self-esteem or self-worth. However without alcohol and other drugs in their system these men can become honest responsible and productive members of society. The changes are significant in just a few short months, but a strong lifelong recovery foundation takes a year or two with proper guidance.

Our goal at serenity house is to help these men put their lives back together, most of them for the first time period this sounds like a big order, but together and through spiritual principles we are making a difference. We believe that raising self-esteem and self-worth is a key to substantiating long-term recovery. Because self-centeredness is at the core of addiction, we encourage addicts to reach out for help and to help others in this process. Another focus is not only to remain abstinent from alcohol and other drugs, but also to eradicate other addictive behaviors as well. And finally our goal is to assist residents in finding a lifelong recovery program of their choice, which goes well beyond abstinence, and positively affects all areas of their life on a continuous basis.
